U.S. gallons versus imperial gallons

10 U.S. liquid gallons equals 37.85 L, 40 U.S. quarts and about 8.33 imperial gallons.

An imperial gallon is larger than a U.S. gallon. This converts volume only; fuel weight additionally requires an appropriate density.

Twenty gallons: which gallon?

A quantity stated as 20 imperial gallons is about 90.92 liters. Twenty U.S. liquid gallons is about 75.71 liters. Entering 20 here for an imperial-gallon quantity would therefore understate its volume by about 15.21 liters. Check the unit on the tank information or delivery record before entering a number.

The input is U.S. liquid gallons. For an imperial quantity, multiply by 4.54609 ÷ 3.785411784 first: 20 imperial gallons becomes about 24.02 U.S. gallons. The imperial-gallon output should return approximately 20 after display rounding. For liters, divide by 3.785411784 to get the input value.

Volume is not fuel mass. Converting liters to gallons does not establish pounds, usable fuel or flight endurance. Those require the appropriate density, aircraft information and consumption assumptions. Check NIST’s liquid-volume conversion factors or continue to the fuel-weight calculator.

Formula and method

One U.S. gallon equals approximately 3.78541 liters.
