47° 57′ as decimal degrees
47° 57′ 0″ converts to 47 + 57 / 60 = 47.95°. For a south or west coordinate, select −1 to obtain −47.95°.
Minutes and seconds are fractions of a degree. 47° 57′ is not 47.57°, and a sign error can put a point in a different hemisphere.
Formula and method
Decimal degrees = degrees + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600, with the appropriate north/south or east/west sign.
